Survival in Auschwitz?

Primo Levi's story is supposed to be about the triumph of the human spirit. But to anyone who's read it, don't you think that throughout his whole story he seemed very cold and empty? Sort of like his spirit was broken? That the only thing he knew how to do, or the only thing he could do, was leave behind any emotion or sympathy for his fellow prisoners, and survive? To me that's destruction of the human spirit. As I read the book, I couldn't help but feel no emotion for him, because it seemed he didn't want any. For the human spirit to be shattered like that, it makes me very sad.
