Allman Brothers Band and Wet Willie are two great bands from the south (like Lynyrd Skynyrd).

If you go a bit earlier (say late 60s/early 70's) you can add Cream, The Who, Led Zepellin, Jimi Hendrix and just about any band that played at Woodstock. Look it up :-)
