What does this quoitation mean?

suffer a triumph; be the hammer or the anvil

What does this quoitation mean?live update

The correct quote is:

鈥淵ou must either conquer and rule or serve and lose, suffer or triumph, be the anvil or the hammer鈥?(by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)

It means that in life there is no middle ground. Each person will either win or lose - no inbetween. But much of the time it is up to US whether we are victorious or fail. We often have the choice of being the hammer which does the striking or the anvil that gets struck.
